Yoshitomo Nara

Yoshitomo Nara (b. 1959, Hirosaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated living artists. His wide-eyed, big-headed children — by turns defiant, wounded, and tender — have become some of the most recognizable images in contemporary art. Nara studied at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts before spending over a decade in Germany, where he absorbed the punk sensibility and expressive directness that still mark his work. Behind the apparent simplicity of his figures lies an emotional complexity — loneliness, rebellion, resilience — that has earned him both critical esteem and an intensely devoted collector base. In 2019 his painting Knife Behind Back set an auction record for a Japanese artist at Sotheby's Hong Kong, and his retrospectives have travelled to major museums internationally, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His signed editions offer collectors a direct connection to this singular voice.
