Takashi Murakami

Takashi Murakami (b. 1962, Tokyo) is among the most influential artists of his generation. Trained in traditional nihonga painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, where he earned his doctorate, he went on to overturn the boundary between Japanese fine art and popular culture entirely. His "Superflat" theory — introduced in 2000 — connects the flattened picture planes of classical Japanese painting with the aesthetics of anime and manga, and has shaped two decades of contemporary art discourse. Murakami is the founder of Kaikai Kiki Co., through which he produces his work and champions younger Japanese artists, several of whom this gallery also represents. His collaborations extend from Louis Vuitton to Kanye West's Graduation, and his work has been the subject of major exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Palace of Versailles. His signed, numbered offset editions — including the works presented here — are the most accessible entry point into his practice and are actively collected worldwide.
